Rio Double Feature Review

Double Feature Review: Rio and Rio 2                                                                               4-20-18
WARNING! This review contains spoilers for Rio and Rio 2.
Blue Sky Studios, located in Greenwich, Connecticut, is a talented computer animation studio, almost as talented as Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks. Unfortunately, they have a bad reputation for making almost endless Ice Age sequels. However, when not working on Ice Age sequels, Blue Sky can actually show potential. Today, in honor of Earth Day, I will review Rio and Rio 2, two of their most successful non-Ice Age movies in years.
Rio Poster
Rio 1 is about a Spix's macaw named Blu (Jesse Eisenberg). Blu was captured by an illegal pet salesman when he was a chick and was shipped to Moose Lake, Minnesota. One day, a young girl named Linda (Leslie Mann) finds Blu and keeps him as a pet. Fifteen years later, Linda and Blu work at a bookstore, and one day, an ornithologist named Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro) enters the store and tells them that Blu is the last male of his species. He, Linda, and Tulio travel to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and meet another Spix's macaw, a female named Jewel (Anne Hathaway). However, Blu and Jewel don't exactly get along. One day, Blu and Jewel get kidnapped by smugglers and a cockatoo named Nigel (Jemaine Clement). Blu and Jewel escape, but there's one problem: Blu can't fly. Now he and Jewel, who are now chained together, have to find a way home, as well as a way to get freed from the shackles.
There have been very few animated features, aside from Disney's Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros, that have portrayed Brazil in a positive light. Director Carlos Saldana, who is part Brazilian himself, wanted to make an animated movie about the country for a long time, and boy, did Blue Sky achieve artistically. The designs of the buildings and scenery are absolutely gorgeous.

The animation on both the human and animal characters is also incredible, considering that this is Blue Sky's first film since the first Ice Age to feature humans.

The songs are also enjoyable, though I wish they could've been longer. Each of them, except for one, seem to get interrupted.
In conclusion, while Rio may not hold a candle to other computer animated movies of the 2010s like How to Train Your Dragon, Inside Out, Zootopia, or Moana, it's still a solid watch that will get kids interested in Brazil.

In Rio 2, Linda and Tulio get married and open a bird sanctuary, while Blu and Jewel have three kids: Tiago, Bia, and Carla. However, Jewel is concerned that they are becoming domesticated, as she was born and raised in the wild. Meanwhile, Linda and Tulio discover a feather that may have belonged to a Spix's macaw! This encourages Blu, Jewel, and their kids, along with Rafael the toucan, Pedro the red-crested cardinal, and Nico the canary, to go on an adventure to the Amazon Rainforest. While in the Amazon, Blu and his family discover an uncharted area populated with Spix's macaws. Jewel even reunites with her long-lost father Eduardo (Andy Garcia), but he is skeptical about Blu. Meanwhile, Nigel, who had his wings broken after getting caught in a turbine in the first film, is now reduced to a Vaudeville fortune teller. Now knowing that Blu has returned, Nigel vows revenge, and plans on capturing and killing Blu with the help of a tamandua anteater named Charlie and a poison dart frog named Gabi (Kristen Chenoweth).
I am aware that some people didn't like Rio 2 or found it disappointing, but I think Rio 2 is important for those who care about the environment. This movie has a theme about illegal logging. That means people cut down trees to either make into novelty items or to make room for new shops or stadiums.
This is one of the reasons Eduardo in Rio 2 doesn't trust humans: Sometimes, they build entire projects from the ground up and are unaware of the consequences.
Preachiness aside, another thing to appreciate about Rio 2 is the gorgeous improved animation and irresistible music.
Also, Kristen Chenoweth is perfect as Gabi the Frog, who is lovesick over Nigel.

And Nigel's performance of 'I Will Survive', under the alias of 'Bob', is spectacular.
Rio 2 also contains the most inclusive non-Ice Age animal cast in a Blue Sky film to date: The wildlife of the Amazon Rainforest.
I have to say that the turtles during the auditions are funny, even if they are a bit similar to the sloths in Zootopia.

Before I close this review, I would like to list some examples of what kids at home can do to help the environment worldwide.
1. Pick up litter, or trash, outside wherever you go. You'll find it everywhere, from on the ground, in water, and even in trees!
2. Put items made of paper, plastic, and metal in recycle bins.
3. Do not use pesticide to get rid of unwanted insects. Pesticide kills bumblebees, and bees are very important animals in our ecosystem. Instead, use neem oil. It looks something like this.
Garden Safe 16-fl oz Neem Oil Extract Concentrate

4. Turn off and/or unplug electric devices when you're not using them.
5. This may be tough, but if you can, try to take shorter showers. If that's too much for you, try brushing your teeth with the faucet OFF.
6. If you can, try using fluorescent light bulbs instead of the typical round bulbs. Not only are fluorescent light bulbs cheaper than the round ones, they also last ten times longer! They look something like this.

7. DO NOT put batteries in the trash bin. They contain chemicals that will harm the environment.
In conclusion, while Rio 2 may not appeal to everyone, it's definitely better than the Ice Age sequels.
Rio 1 rating: 3 1/2 stars out of 5.
Rio 2 rating: 3 stars out of 5.

My DVD Collection 6.0

Hi, everybody! Another birthday means another DVD collection update. New to this collection are WALL-E (on Blu-Ray), Fantastic Mr. Fox (also on on Blu-Ray), Song of the Sea, April and the Extraordinary World, Coco, and some more Best of the Muppet Show DVDs.
This picture shows every movie/special I will watch between April 11th and May 11th. However, I do not own Rio 2, It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown, or It's the Pied Piper, Charlie Brown. They are all rentals from the library.

The grey tin in this section is the rare Walt Disney Treasures: Silly Symphonies DVD.

Once again, the black DVD case (the one above Dumbo and below Monsters Inc) is Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Well, that wraps up my DVD collection for now! On April 25th, I will post an announcement for my remake of an old story I have written, Steven and Phoebe!

Contest Announcement and Rules

Contest Announcement and Rules
This is for all you artists out there on websites like Facebook, Twitter, tumblr, and Deviant Art. From today until June 5th, I will be hosting a contest in which you get to choose what animal Merida gets to be! First, here are the rules.
  1. It has to be an anthropomorphic mammal.
  2. It cannot be a primate, domestic cat or dog, or aquatic mammal.
  3. It has to be family friendly, for the sake of my blog, so inappropriate art will not be accepted.
  4. The animal has to fit Merida's personality. Walt Disney once said 'Unless the character becomes a personality, it can't be believed.'
  5. Make sure that Merida keeps her dress as the animal you desire. However, you don't need to make her wear any shoes, since none of the characters in Zootopia wear shoes.
  6. Keep Merida's animal design in the Zootopia style, but don't make her look too human.
  7. Do not give Merida hair, since none of the characters in Zootopia have hair like humans.
Once you finished your drawing, email it to me at andrewsateriale@gmail.com. The grand prize will be a movie review request of your choice, and I will review it in July! However, I have three simple rules for my movie reviews.
  1. The movie cannot be rated higher than PG.
  2. The movie has to have (or had) a theatrical release in the US. However, as of March 14th, 2018, I have made three exceptions.

Animal Princesses

Today is my birthday, and instead of you giving me presents, I give you presents! Remember how in Zootopia, Duke Weaselton can be seen selling animal versions of animated Disney movies like Tangled, Wreck-it Ralph, Frozen, and Big Hero 6?
Well, that made me think. 'What would the other Disney Princesses look like in the world of Zootopia?' That lead me to a fun yet daunting task: To interpret the Disney Princesses as animals. May I proudly present the Animal Princesses!
Snow White
First, we have Snow White as a sheep. I fit each of the princesses by their personality and nationality, and Snow truly is gentle as a lamb. I even imagine the Zootopia equivalent of Snow White to be called 'Sheep White and the Seven Mice.'
Cinderella
For Cinderella, I decided to make her a rabbit like Judy Hopps and her family. I imagine the Zootopia equivalent of Cinderella to be called 'Cinderabbit.'
Aurora
For Aurora, which was a particular challenge, I made her a roe deer, a deer native to Europe. Because of the fact that Aurora only had 18 minutes of screen time in Sleeping Beauty, we honestly didn't get to know much about her personality.
Ariel
For Ariel as a mermaid, I made her the rather odd-looking manatee. When manatees were first discovered by Christopher Columbus during the 15th century, he and his crew mistook them for mermaids.
FL fig04.jpg
For Ariel as a human, I made her a hippopotamus. I made this decision because dugongs (not to be confused with the Pokemon Dewgong), a cousin of the manatee, are in fact related to the elephant.

Belle
For Belle, I made her a European Mink, an endangered mustelid that is unfortunately killed so rich people can wear them as scarves.
 Mink1.jpg
Jasmine
For Jasmine, it was difficult, but I made her a jerboa, a hopping rodent that lives in the deserts of Africa and the Middle East.
Four-toes-jerboa.jpg
I'm sorry I didn't giver her the signature Disney eyes, but I don't think they would fit a mouse. Instead, I took inspiration from The Rescuers (not to be confused with The Rescuers Down Under).
Bob Newhart in The Rescuers (1977)
Pocahontas
For Pocahontas, I made her into a puma, a North American wildcat that is also known as the cougar and the mountain lion.
Cougar snow.jpg
Mulan
For Mulan, which was another particular challenge, I made her into a tiger. I didn't want to make her a panda, China's national animal, because it would be too obvious.
Tiana
And finally, for Tiana, I made her a zebra. I chose this because zebras live in Africa, and Tiana is African-American.
For fun, I made Rapunzel a horse, which is actually official in the Zootopia world. Instead of Tangled, Rapunzel's film is called 'Wrangled'.
I chose not to do Merida because I had trouble choosing what animal to make her. That's where you come in!
To be continued later today...

A Brief History of PDI

Pacific Data Images PDI logo.svg
PDI, short for Pacific Data Images, was founded by Carl Rosenthal in 1980 in Redwood City, California. Their goal, much like Pixar's, was to bring computer animation to new heights. Some of their early work includes short films like Teddy Bear Maelstrom (1983), Chromosaurus (1984), Locomotion (1989), and Elephant Bubbles (1984).

Some notable people who got their start at PDI include Steve Goldberg, a visual effects supervisor for Disney, and Glenn McQueen, a talented Pixar animator who died too soon.

In 1989, PDI helped Jim Henson make the impossible: A CGI Muppet named Waldo C Graphic. You may recognize him from Muppet*Vision 3D at Walt Disney World.

They also helped bring Homer Simpson into the third dimension with Treehouse of Horror VI's Homer3 in 1995.
Also in 1995, PDI formed a partnership with the newly-founded DreamWorks Animation, in which they worked on the second computer animated feature film to be released after Toy Story, Antz. It premiered October 2nd, 1998.
Keep in mind that computer animation was in its infancy by this point.
The success of Antz lead to more successful co-productions with DreamWorks including Shrek, Madagascar, and Megamind.

In case you're wondering, PDI was not involved with Shrek Forever After or Puss in Boots.
In 2014, DreamWorks released two big-budget CGI films with PDI: Mr. Peabody and Sherman and The Penguins of Madagascar (not to be confused with the TV series).

Unfortunately, both films were box-office failures. PDI was closed on January 22nd, 2015, and over 500 employees were laid off.
