Movie Review: Ready Player One

Movie Review: Ready Player One                                                                                                 10-3-23

In the year 2045, mankind has decided to ignore the world’s problems and escape into OASIS, an immersive MMO VR website where anyone can be anything and go anywhere. When OASIS creator James Halliday died at the age of 67, he gave the fortune of his company (500 billion dollars!!!) to whoever can find the Easter Egg he hid in the OASIS. Now, it’s up to 18-year-old boy Wade Watts (OASIS username Parzival) to find the three keys to the Egg before the power-hungry Nolan Sorrento and his company IOI (Innovative Online Industries) gets to them first.

Similar to The Super Mario Bros Movie later this year, Ready Player One is a movie that critics shouldn’t be so harsh on with a story that parallels real life so much, outstanding production design in both the real world and the OASIS, characters that adults in their late teens and early twenties can relate to, good music from Alan Silverstri, and computer animation that showcases the movie’s 175-million-dollar budget.

Another thing to appreciate about Ready Player One is the message the movie has about being careful about who you meet online. In this movie, you can’t give out any information in the OASIS or even use your real name. For all you know, someone you may have a crush on may be a 300-pound man in Suburban Detroit in his mom’s basement. This is especially true to real life, as people who you find on websites like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram may not turn out who they say they are.

Wade meeting Artim3s in Aech's workshop.

Another thing to appreciate about Ready Player One is the sheer amount of licensed IPs (intellectual properties) that appear in the movie. If you look at the credits, you’ll see nearly 40 companies that had their creations featured in the movie, including Atari, Viacom, Microsoft, Sanrio, and even Disney! Makes you wonder how Halliday managed to afford all these characters without getting slapped with a lawsuit.

In this shot alone, there are properties from Disney, Nintendo, Namco, Frito Lay, and Taito.

In conclusion, if you want to watch something different that is also a lot of fun for older kids, then Ready Player One is the movie for you. For those parents reading this review, just wait until your kids are at least 12 or 13 to watch this movie.

The Animal Show- Chameleon and Flounder Part 2

Jake: And now, let’s see what’s cooking in the kitchen with Yves St. La Roche.

(cuts to Yves in his kitchen)

Yves: Bonjour, bonjour little animals out there! You may have learned that our first guest, Camilla the Chameleon, eats bugs. As a bug myself, yuck! So instead, I’m gonna show you how to properly cook a crab. First, we grab a crab. Where did the little dickens go? Here we are! (the crab pinches Yves’ nose) I finally met a bigger stinker than a skunk. (grabs a ladle) Come here, you crusty crustacean!

(crab blows raspberry)

Yves: That’s it! I’m gonna chase you around and then cook you!

(cuts back to Stinky and Jake)

Jake: And now, from the oceans of the world…

Stinky: World.

Jake: Please welcome Stanley the Flounder!

(Bunnie carries over Stanley in a medium-sized tank)

Stanley: Hello, Jake and Stinky. I’ve been told that you want to talk about camouflage.

Jake: Yes, we do.

Stinky: I thought flounders were yellow, chubby, and hung out with mermaids.

Stanley: Only in cartoons, landlubber.

Stinky: Why are you flat like a pancake?

Stanley: It helps us blend in with our backgrounds. Look!

Stinky: Why are your eyes on top of each other?

Stanley: That’s just how we flounders look. Also, when we hide in the sand, only our eyes are visible.

Jake: Like crocodiles and alligators?

Stanley: Exactly! And just like octopuses, we can change the color of our skin.

Stinky: And what do you eat?

Stanley: Small fish, worms, and crustaceans.

Stinky: What are crustaceans?

Stanley: Boneless animals that include shrimp, lobsters, and crabs. But mostly shrimp.

Jake: Even though you’re not as popular as chameleons, you’re still a cool fish.

Stanley: Thank you, Jake. Can I sing a song for you guys?

Jake: Yes, you may. Here is Stanley singing ‘The Flounder Song’.

Stanley: I am a flounder, a type of fish.

I may not be as be fancy as others wish.

But I can change color and hide under rocks.

You’ll be surprised to hear this flounder talk!

Flounders may be strange, but we’re also cool.

I bet you never saw one in a school!

I am a flounder, and I’m happy as a clam!

I’m not like an angelfish, which is clearly a ham.

I’m an underwater creature who’s a pro at camouflage

And you can fit up to a hundred in your garage!

Bunnie: And now it’s time for the Animal Awards! Today, the animal with the best camouflage! Could it be… The scorpionfish?

Armstrong: The long-eared owl?

Bunnie: The crab spider?

Armstrong: Or the arctic hare?

Bunnie: And the winner is… the long-eared owl! With its brown feathers and silent flying, this owl is the perfect camouflaged predator. Back to you, Stinky and Jake!

Jake: And now, it’s storytime. Today, our story is about a flounder. “Once upon a time, there was a flounder named Francis. Francis is nocturnal, meaning he sleeps during the day, and is more active at night. On this night, he was hungry, so he decided to catch some shrimp. However, he had to stop to avoid a shark. After that, Francis continued to eat some shrimp until he felt full, and he continued his night by exercise-swimming. The end.”

Stinky (now wearing a flower along with his rainbow shirt): That was a great story, Jake.

Jake: Stinky, what’s the flower for?

Stinky: Oh, this crab gave me advice on camouflage if I saved him from Yves. (holds up the crab)

Yves: Bonjour, Stinky and Jake. Have you seen a crab around here?

Stinky (lying): Oh, no. We have not seen a crab around here. Haven’t we, Jake?

Jake: No crabs around here.

Yves: Hmm, no crabs. I guess I’ll make something else. How about chicken nuggets with barbeque sauce?

Stinky: That sounds delicious!

Armstrong: I’d love that, too. I am a chicken hawk, after all.

Yves: Then it’s settled. I’m going to make chicken nuggets today! (walks off to make nuggets as crab sighs in relief)

(cut to Armstrong and Bunnie in front of the habitat door)

Bunnie: Okay, Armstrong. It’s Habitat Time! Today, we’re going to the enchanted island of Madagascar!

Armstrong: Mada-who-ha?

Bunnie: Madagascar. It’s a country to the west coast of Africa, and is home to many unique animals and plants. (opens the door) Let’s go!

Armstrong: So this is Madagascar, huh? Looks like Hawaii.

Bunnie: Many people think Madagascar is one big jungle, but there are also forests, mountains, deserts, and even a few human settlements!

Armstrong: What’s that? Some sort of squirrel?

Bunnie: No, silly! That’s a ring-tailed lemur. There are about a hundred lemur species, all of which can only be found in Madagascar.

Here’s another lemur, the mouse lemur. This animal has the record of being the world’s smallest primate.

Armstrong: You’re telling me that this tiny thing is related to the gorilla?!

Bunnie: You better believe it, Armstrong!

And this little guy is a mudskipper. You know how most fish need to live in water?

Armstrong: Yeah, why?

Bunnie: Well, mudskippers have evolved lungs so they can walk on land. Their pectoral fins had adapted to walking on land, and can even climb rocks and trees!

Armstrong: Well, how about that? A fish out of water.

What are we doing back in the trees?

Bunnie: We’re meeting the master of disguise, the chameleon!

Armstrong: Like Camilla from earlier?

Bunnie: Exactly! About two thirds of the world’s chameleon species live in Madagascar. That’s about 130 chameleon species found only on this island!

As well as lemurs and chameleons, there are also some predators native to Madagascar. Such as this mongoose.

Armstrong: A mongoose? Like Ernie?! Help! Fly for the hills! He’ll ruin the show again.

(Bunnie and Armstrong leave Madagascar and head back to the Animal Show studio)

Bunnie: For Habitat Time, it’s Bunnie Bear-

Armstrong: And Armstrong the chickenhawk.

Bunnie: Just back from Madagascar.

(Tizzy flies around Stinky and Jake again)

Tizzy: Quiz time!

Jake: And what’s the quiz this time?

Tizzy: Well, here it is! (cuts to the screen below)

Is this a dinosaur? Give it a think. Back in a buzz!

(Cuts to Stinky and Jake trying to answer the question)

Stinky: It must be a dinosaur. Just look at those horns!

Jake: That’s impossible, Stinky. Dinosaurs have been dead for 65 million years!

Tizzy: Well, here’s the answer. Is this a dinosaur? No, that’s just a Jackson’s chameleon, but males have horns like a Triceratops. Bee-lieve it, because it’s true!

Jake: Thanks for the quiz, Tizzy. That's all the time we have today, and until next time, keep seeing the world through the eyes of animals. Bye!

Author's Notes: The puppet used for Camilla has also been used for Blanche in Song of the Cloud Forest. Yves chasing a crab is a nod to The Little Mermaid, which of course had Sebastian being chased by Chef Louis. On The Animal Show, whenever there was a fully aquatic character on the show, he/she was often put in either a tank or a bucket. Octavio, mentioned by Jake earlier, was one of those guest stars that had to be in water. In the Animal Show episode 'Koala and Ostrich', Yves St. La Roche asked thousands of koalas if they'd rather have eucalyptus leaves or delicious food such as chicken nuggets, pizza, and strawberries. And what did the koalas pick? Eucalyptus leaves.
In another Animal Show episode 'Mongoose and Secretary Bird', a mongoose named Ernie came on the show and tried making lots of changes, much to the chagrin of Stinky and Jake.
Ernie forcing Stinky and Jake to wear pit helmets.
Stanley the Flounder is named after the children's book character Flat Stanley.
Next week on The Animal Show, you'll meet two poisonous animals with the poison dart frog and the scorpion!

The Animal Show- Chameleon and Flounder Part 1

Stinky and Jake: Here on the Animal Show.

Here on the Animal Show.

Here on the Animal Show!

Bunnie Bear: From under the ocean, over the clouds, and around the world…

Armstrong the Chickenhawk: Here comes the wild side of wild life.

Bunnie: The Animal Show!

Armstrong: And now, let’s have a wild welcome for your furry friends-

Bunnie: Stinky and Jake!

Stinky and Jake: Now it’s The Animal Show!

Jake: Hello, all you animals out there!

Stinky: I’m Stinky.

Jake: And I’m Jake. And today, we are going to meet the chameleon and the flounder, both of which are masters of camouflage!

Stinky: That’s great, Jake! Jake, what’s camouflage?

Jake: You see, Stinky. Camouflage is when an animal blends in with its surroundings. Some animals look like plants, while others, like today’s guests, can actually change color!

Stinky: Change color? That’s so cool! Can skunks camouflage?

Jake: I don’t think so, Stinky.

Stinky: Well, this skunk can do camouflage! I’ll be right back, Jake! (runs off to find a shirt)

Jake: While Stinky is off running somewhere, here are Bunnie and Armstrong with…

Bunnie: That’s amazing! Today, we take a look at a walking leaf!

Armstrong: Are you silly? Leaves don’t walk. They just lie there on branches of trees.

Bunnie: Well, not this one, Armstrong! A walking leaf is an insect that is shaped like a leaf. That way, meat-eating animals will confuse it for just another leaf.

Armstrong: Now there’s a creepy-crawly who will make you say…

Jake: That’s amazing! (Stinky arrives with a camouflage shirt) Stinky, what are you wearing?

Stinky: A camouflage shirt. That way, I can blend in with my surroundings.

Jake: I can still see you, Stinky. Anyway, here’s our first guest, from the rainforests of Madagascar, Africa, southern Asia, and Europe…

Stinky: Europe.

Jake: Please welcome Camilla the Chameleon!

Camilla: Hello, Jake. Hello, Stinky. Why is Stinky wearing a green shirt?

Stinky: It’s my camouflage outfit.

Camille: I can still see you, Stinky. Anyway, chameleons can change color to blend into our surroundings, like this. First, my brother Pablo is pink like a human.

But now look! He’s green like an iguana!

Jake: That’s so cool! Is it also true that chameleons have long tongues like frogs and anteaters?

Camilla: You better believe it, brother bear. Take a look at this!

Camilla: We chameleons love to eat bugs, so we use our long sticky tongues to grab those that may fly away.

Stinky: Are your tails as fancy as your tongues?

Camilla: As a matter of fact, they are! We use our tails to grab onto branches, like this.

Stinky: You look like a monkey hanging around like that.

Camilla: We do, Stinky. It was great having a talk with you, guys.

Jake: It was, Camilla. Bye now! (Camilla walks off) And now it’s time for…

Stinky and Jake: Baby Talk!

Purple chameleon: Where am I? This doesn’t look like the jungle. Might as well get out of this egg. I must be in some kind of force field, and those eggs must be my brothers and sisters. I hatched first, and that means I’m the oldest!

(Later…)

Purple: Wow, look at all of you, but how come only one of you is purple, and the rest are all green?

Green chameleon 1: We’re chameleons! We can change the color of our skin.

Purple: Chameleon? I always thought I was a gecko. But we still have one more brother-

Green chameleon 2: Or sister.

Purple: Right. Brother OR sister that hasn’t hatched yet!

Green 1: He or she will hatch in a while. Now, we need to find a way to run away from these silly creatures!

(back at the studio, Stinky has changed clothes again; This time, a rainbow tie-dye shirt)

Jake: Stinky, what are you wearing this time?

Stinky: Oh, this? Well, since the set is all colorful, it only made sense for me to wear a colorful shirt. (Tizzy then buzzes by)

Tizzy the Bee: Hi, everyone! Time for a quiz! (cuts to the screen below)

The question is which of these animals changes color? The laughing tree frog, the octopus, the stoat, or the anole? Give it a think. Back in a buzz!

(Tizzy flies back to Stinky and Jake, who are having a hard time finding the answer)

Jake: I believe it’s the octopus. We definitely had an octopus on the show before. Remember Octavio?

Stinky: I’m pretty sure it’s the lizard.

Tizzy: Maybe you should hear the question again. (flies back to the previous screen) The question is which of these animals changes color? The answer is they all do!

The laughing tree frog, otherwise known as the Peron’s tree frog, is from Australia, and males change from brown to green to attract female frogs. However, once this frog turns green, it stays green forever.

Octopuses, or octopi, are masters of camouflage, including this mimic octopus. This octopus uses its unique body shape to mimic other animals, such as a flounder, a lionfish, and even a sea snake!

A stoats’ fur changes color with the season. It’s brown in the summer…

And white during the winter!

And finally, an anole changes color depending on its mood.

Bee-lieve it, because it’s true!

To be continued in Part 2...

2024 in Animated Features

Well, 2023 is over, and 2024 has just begun! With Bob Iger back in charge, Disney has slowly been recovering with The Little Mermaid (depending on who you ask) and Elemental. Illumination has finally made a movie that appealed to the fans of its source material with The Super Mario Bros Movie. Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse broke many records, including the longest-running American animated film, the animated movie with the most people working on it (at least 1,000 animators working on 6 different universes and 240 characters!), and the highest-grossing animated movie from the studio. With all that said, let's see what 2024 has to offer for animated movies!

The year will be kicked off with two streaming-exclusive animated movies in February, and even the same day. First, from Paramount Animation comes The Tiger's Apprentice. Based on the book by Laurence Yep, the movie will be about a boy named Tom who teams up with a shapeshifting tiger to raise a rare Phoenix egg. Instead of being released in theaters, The Tiger's Apprentice will be a Paramount+ exclusive.

Next, for the first time since 2021, DreamWorks will release two movies within a month of each other. First is the Netflix-exclusive Orion and the Dark. This movie will be about a boy named Orion who encounters a character known as the Dark, who teaches him that there's nothing to fear but fear itself. Similar to Captain Underpants and Spirit: Untamed, 'Orion' will have the animation outsourced to Mikros Images in France.

Next in March, Po will appear in his first movie in nearly a decade, Kung Fu Panda 4. This movie will be about Po trying to find a new Dragon Warrior while facing a new villain, the Chameleon. Instead of Jennifer Yuh Nelson directing the project, Mike Mitchell, director of Sky High, Shrek Forever After, Trolls, and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, will direct the movie. This movie better be a success, since Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken was a box-office failure that cost the company 80 million dollars.

In May, the famous Monday-hating lasagna-loving cat will return for his first theatrical animated movie, The Garfield Movie. This will also be the first movie in nearly 20 years to be directed by Mark Dindal, who nearly left the animation industry after the critical failure of Chicken Little.

In June, Pixar will release their first sequel that will have no involvement of John Lasseter, Inside Out 2. This movie will continue the adventures of Joy and the gang with Riley going through puberty. Instead of Pete Docter directing the film, Kelsey Mann, who was a story supervisor for Monsters University, The Good Dinosaur, and Onward, will helm the project. My main concern is that I don't want Inside Out 2 to be like Turning Red but with no pandas.

In July, whether you like it or not, Gru and his Minions will return for another adventure with Despicable Me 4. I'm only seeing this movie if the girls have been aged up, has a story that matches the quality of the first two Despicable Mes, and the Minions have less screentime. To quote the Simpsons 'at first they were funny and cute, but now they're annoying'.

In September, the famous giant robots will appear in their first animated movie in over 35 years, Transformers One. This movie will be an origin story set on the robot planet CyberTron, and the focus will be on the relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron. Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley will direct the project, while the animation will be done at Industrial Lights and Magic.

And finally, in December from Warner Bros Animation (but not WAG), there will be the very first animated Lord of the Rings movie since the 70s, Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim. This movie will take place 183 years before the events of The Two Towers and will tell the story of Helm Hammerhand, a legendary king who must fight an army of Dunlendings. This movie was going to be released in April, but was pushed to December because of the writer's strike.

Of all these films, I'm most excited for Inside Out 2, since I love the original. I also want to give The Garfield Movie a try when the date claws closer.

Once again, there will be more animated movies than the ones listed here, but these were ones I wanted to talk about.

Movie Review: Chicken Run 2: Dawn of the Nugget

Movie Review: Chicken Run 2: Dawn of the Nugget                                                                 12-15-23

Set some time after the escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger and Rocky now have a fledgling of their own: An energetic free-spirited daughter named Molly. Molly yearns for adventure beyond the island they live on, even though humans eat chickens. When Molly escapes the island and gets put on a truck to a new chicken farm, it’s up to Ginger and the gang to rescue Molly before she gets made into chicken nuggets.

Even though Chicken Run 2 has a plot too similar to other animated movies in the market, it makes up for it with outstanding animation, new voice acting that sounds identical to the original, and a score from Harry Gregson-Williams that expertly mixes old music with the new.

Mack has finished building a replica of the new chicken farm.

If I were to complain about one thing, however, I don’t like how Fowler is treated in this movie. In the original film, Fowler served as the foil to Rocky the Lone-Free Ranger. Yes, we would ramble about his RAF days, but he also had some leadership in his giblets. In Chicken Run 2, however, Fowler feels more like a rooster version of Abe Simpson.

Fowler making conversation with a snail.

In conclusion, while nowhere near as outstanding as the original, Chicken Run 2: Dawn of the Nugget is still a lot of fun for those who loved the original or are just big Aardman fans.
