The next day, Joe arrived in Boyson City, but everyone was filled with panic.
“Why is everyone so uptight?” Joe asked.
“Sandra.” Replied a citizen. “She likes to scare everyone with her Ghost-Type Pokemon.”
“Really?” Joe asked. “Even when there shouldn’t be a Ghost-Type Pokemon for miles? Haven’t you tried training a Normal-Type Pokemon like Snorlax, Stoutland, or Swellow?”
“We don’t use Pokemon of any kind here.” Replied another citizen. “Sandra’s basically the mayor here, and she orders us around as if she were a Vespiquen.”
“Well,” Said Joe, opening up his laptop. “I’ll teach that Sandy a lesson.” He swapped his team out for Shiftry, Alolan Raticate, Heliolisk, Indeedee, and Crawdaunt. After getting out his Pokemon, Joe closed his laptop and entered the Gym, but once inside, a Gengar popped out and scared the 19-year-old.
“Is that some kid in my Gym?” Asked a voice. It turned out to be Sandra, Boyson City’s Gym Leader.
“Hey!” Said Joe. “I’m 19 years old, and I beat Rainbow Rocket last year! If it weren’t for me, you would’ve been under control by Giovanni!”
“You have a point.” Said Sandra, returning Gengar to his Poke Ball. “What are you doing in my Gym?”
“I’m here to challenge you!” Said Joe. “And you need to stop bullying these people! You’ll lose your job if you keep this up!”
“You have a point.” Said Sandra. “How about we make a deal. If you win, I’ll give you the Ghoul Badge and a surprise TM. I’ll also stop bullying the denizens.”
“And what happens if you win?” Asked Joe.
“Well, you’ll have to pay me 40,000 Poke Dollars.” Replied Sandra. “Other than that, not many stakes. I may love to terrorize my people, but I’m no way heartless. Enough chatter, let’s start the battle. Go, Saltygeist!” Saltygeist was sent out.
“I choose you!” Said Joe. “Shiftry!” Shiftry was sent out.
“Shiftry!” Said Joe. “Use Leaf Blade!” Shiftry lashed at Saltygeist with her sharp leaves, leaving the Saltwater Pokemon with a quarter of its HP.
“Saltygeist!” Said Sandra. “Use Sweet Scent!” Saltygeist enamored Shiftry with the smell of seawater, lowering her Evasiveness stat by one stage.
“Shiftry!” Said Joe. “Use Night Slash!” Shiftry slashed at Saltygeist again, and the Saltwater Pokemon fainted.
“Luckily, my next Pokemon has amazing Special stats!” Said Sandra, returning Saltygeist to its Poke Ball. “Go, Mismagius!” Mismagius was sent out.
“Great as usual, Shiftry!” Said Joe, returning the Wicked Pokemon to her Poke Ball. “Go, Raticate!” Alolan Raticate was sent out.
“Mismagius!” Said Sandra. “Use Dazzling Gleam!” Mismagius attacked Alolan Raticate with a powerful flash that dealt about 70 Hit Points to the Mouse Pokemon.
“Raticate!” Said Joe. “Use Assurance!” Alolan Raticate pressed her feet against Mismagius, leaving the Magical Pokemon with 40% of her HP.
“Mismagius!” Said Sandra. “Use Grudge!” Mismagius chanted a mysterious spell that would reduce the PP of Alolan Raticate’s next move to 0 if it faints.
“Why do I feel like this happened before?” Asked Joe. “Anyway, Raticate, use Crunch!” Alolan Raticate bit at Mismagius with her mighty fangs, which not only knocked out the Magical Pokemon, but also depleted Crunch’s HP.
“You’re tougher than I thought.” Said Sandra, returning Mismagius to her Poke Ball. “Go, Drifblim!” Drifblim was sent out.
“You deserve a rest, Raticate!” Said Joe, returning the Mouse Pokemon to her Poke Ball. “Go, Heliolisk!” Heliolisk was sent out.
“Heliolisk!” Said Joe. “Use Thunderbolt!” Heliolisk struck Drifblim with a strong bolt of lightning, dealing 151 Hit Points to the Blimp Pokemon.
“Drifblim!” Said Sandra. “Use Explosion!”
“Not again!” Said Joe, and he, along with Sandra, ran out of the Gym while Drifblim exploded. When they got back inside, both Pokemon fainted, but the Gym was completely intact.
“How is this possible?” Joe asked.
“The Gym is made from Trevenant wood and Runerigus stones.” Replied Sandra, returning Drifblim to her Poke Ball. “Go Gengar!” Gengar was sent out.
“You did your best, Heliolisk!” Said Joe, returning the Generator Pokemon to his Poke Ball. “Go, Indeedee!” Indeedee was sent out.
“Gengar!” Said Sandra. “Use Sucker Punch!” Gengar slugged Indeedee with his filthy fist, dealing about 60 Hit Points to the Emotion Pokemon.
“Indeedee!” Said Joe. “Use Psychic!” Indeedee attacked Gengar with a strong telekinetic force, leaving the Shadow Pokemon with 60% of his HP.
“Gengar!” Said Sandra. “Use Curse!” Gengar stuck a nail into himself, depleting his HP, and inflicted a curse on Indeedee. Unless Joe switched out Indeedee, she’d keep losing HP at the end of each turn until she fainted.
“Indeedee!” Said Joe. “Use Psychic!” Indeedee attacked Gengar with a strong telekinetic force, and the Shadow Pokemon fainted. Indeedee, however, got inflicted by the curse and lost some HP.
“I still have one more chance!” Said Sandra, returning Gengar to his Poke Ball. "Go, Doomstone!" Doomstone was sent out.
“Great as usual, Indeedee!” Said Joe, returning the Emotion Pokemon to her Poke Ball. “Go, Crawdaunt!” Crawdaunt was sent out.
“Crawdaunt!” Said Joe. “Use Crabhammer!” Crawdaunt smacked Doomstone with his mighty claws, leaving the Tomb Stone Pokemon with half its HP.
“Doomstone!” Said Sandra. “Use Energy Ball!” Doomstone drew power from nature and fired it at Crawdaunt, leaving the Rogue Pokemon with half his HP.
“Crawdaunt!” Said Joe. “Use Night Slash!” Crawdaunt lashed at Doomstone with his mighty claws, and the Tomb Stone Pokemon fainted.
“You beat me.” Said Sandra, returning Doomstone to its Poke Ball. “As promised, I won’t treat my people as badly as before. Here, kid. Take this Ghoul Badge.” She handed Joe a black Badge shaped like a cartoon ghost.
“Pokemon up to Level 80 will obey you, even those you receive in trades.” Sandra explained. “Also from my part of the bargain, here’s the TM.” Sandra handed Joe TM77, which contains Hex.
“TM77 contains Hex.” Sandra explained. “This attack does more damage if the opponent is infected with a status problem. Combine this attack with another Pokemon that knows a move like Thunder Wave, Will-O-Wisp, and Toxic, and you have a force to be reckoned with.”
“Thanks for the battle!” Said Joe, returning Crawdaunt to his Poke Ball. “I have to get going now.” Joe left the Gym to head to Evergreen City.
