"Brendan!" He commanded.
"Dad." Brendan responded. "I have to talk to you."
"I need to speak with you, too, son." Said Norman.
"I don't want to fight Dragons." Said Brendan.
"It's time you learn to fight Dragons." Said Norman, at the exact same time Brendan spoke.
"What was that?" They both asked.
"You go first." Said Norman.
"No, you go first." Said Brendan.
"All right. You get your wish. Dragon training... You start in the morning."
"Darn it, I should've gone first."
"You'll need this." Norman handed Brendan an axe.
"I don't want to fight Dragons."
"Come on. Yes, you do."
"Dad, I can't kill Dragons."
"But you will kill Dragons."
"No, I'm very sure that I won't."
"It's time, Brendan."
"Can you not hear me?"
"This
is serious, son. When you carry this axe, you carry all of us with you.
That means you have to walk like a Viking, talk like a Viking, and
think like a Viking. Do we have a deal?"
"Deal."

The next morning, Norman went off to find Dragon Island. Dexio was in charge of training the young recruits.
"Welcome to Dragon training!" He said, opening up the gate.
"Welcome to Dragon training!" He said, opening up the gate.
"No turning back." Said Sarena. She, Gary, Tierno, Ryan, and Bryan were now inside the training stadium.
"I hope I get some serious burns." Said Ryan.
"I'm hoping for some mauling," Said Bryan. "Like on my shoulder or my back."
"It's only fun if you get a scar out of it." Replied Sarena.
"Yeah, no kidding, right?" Said a familiar voice. It was Brendan. "Pain. Love it."
"Oh, great." Said Ryan. "Who let him in?"
"Let's
get started!" Said Dexio. "The recruit who does best will win the honor
of killing his or her first dragon in front of all of Cyllage."
"Brendan already killed a Dragonite." Said Gary jokingly. "Does that disqualify him?" The others laughed.
"Don't
worry." Dexio said to Brendan. "You're small and weak... That'll make
you less of a target. They'll see you as sick and insane and go after
the more Viking-like kids instead. Behind these doors are just a few of
the many species of Pokemon you will fight. The Deadly Salamence..."
"Speed 100, Defense 80." Said Tierno.
"The Hideous Hydreigon..."
"Special Defense 30, times 3."
"The Monstrous Charizard..."
"Special Attack 109."
"The Hellish Heliolisk..."
"Attack 52, Special Attack 109."
"Will you stop that?!" Commanded Dexio. "And the Druddigon."
"Hit Points 77." Whispered Tierno.
"When are we starting the fight?" Asked Gary.
"Right
now." Said Dexio, opening up the cage, letting a Druddigon out.
"Today is about survival. If you get blasted, you're dead! What's the
first thing you need?"
"A doctor?" Asked Brendan.
"X Speed?" Asked Tierno.
"A shield!" Answered Serena.
"Correct."
Said Dexio. "Now go get your shields!" Everyone started grabbing
shields. "The most important piece of equipment is your shield! If you
have to choose between a sword and a shield, take the shield!"
Ryan and Bryan were tugging on the same shield, giving the Druddigon the opportunity to destroy it with its tail.
"Ryan,
Bryan! You're out!" Said Dexio. "Another thing shields are good for is
making noise with it. Make lots of it to throw off a dragon's aim!" The
younger Vikings started to clang with their shields, causing the Pokemon
to get confused.
"All Dragons have a limited number of shots." Said Dexio. "How many does a Druddigon have?"
"Ten?" Guessed Gary.
"No, twelve!" Answered Tierno.
"That's right." Said Dexio. "That's two for each of you!" The Druddigon bit through the shield.
"Tierno,
you're out!" Said Dexio, who spotted Brendan hiding behind a piece of
wood. "Brendan, get in there!" The Druddigon started to notice Gary and
Serena.
"I moved into my parents' basement." Gary said to
Serena. "Come by sometime and work out." Serena simply dodged the Dragon
Pokemon, but it attacked Gary with Dragon Claws.
"So it's just you and me, huh?" Brendan asked Serena.
"Nope,
just you." Said Serena, running away from the fight. Brendan's shield is knocked out of his hands
with a shock wave from Druddigon. Brendan chases after the rolling
shield, with Druddigon chasing him. The Dragon Pokemon had him cornered,
and before he could bite Brendan's head off, Dexio's hook hand grabbed
the Pokemon's maw and dragged it back to its cage.
"Go back to
bed, you overgrown horned toad!" Said Dexio. "Don't worry, you'll have
another chance. Remember, a Dragon will always go for the kill."
