Onward is set in a world populated by a menagerie of mythical creatures like centaurs, gnomes, mermaids, fairies, and elves. Magic was abandoned in favor of safer alternatives like electricity, automobiles, and television. Two elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot, discover an old wizard's staff with a message from their dad, who died when they were too young to remember him. In this note are instructions for a magical spell that could resurrect their father for 24 hours. However, the spell doesn't fully work at first, and destroys the staff’s gem, so Ian and Barely go on the quest to find a new gem for the staff.
Well, Onward may not be as good as Inside Out or Coco, but is better than Brave and The Good Dinosaur. Onward’s strengths come from its stunning animation, a story that siblings will get along with, fantastic world-building, and likable new characters that sit comfortably alongside Woody and Buzz Lightyear, Mike Wazowski and Sulley, Marlin and Dory, and Riley’s emotions.

Director Dan Scanlon admitted in an interview that this movie is based on a personal experience he had when he was a kid: Scanlon’s father died when he was very young, so he devoted the movie to spending the day with the one you lost. This is something I can relate to because last year, both my grandparents died, so I can fit myself in Ian's shoes.
In conclusion, Onward is not Pixar’s best, but is a nice departure from the recent sequel fatigue that has been infecting the movie industry in the last couple of years.
Rating: 3.8 out of 5 stars.
