Aardman Animations' Chicken Run is about a British hen named Ginger (Julia Sawalha), who lives on a chicken farm owned by the wicked Mrs. Tweedy. Whenever the chickens stop laying eggs, Tweedy kills them. When a 'flying' rooster named Rocky (Mel Gibson) crash lands into the farm, Ginger eagerly asks Rocky how he flew so all the chickens can fly to escape Mrs. Tweedy. Meanwhile, Mrs. Tweedy is tired of making minuscule profits and wants to earn real money by baking the chickens into pies.
Now what do I think of Chicken Run? I love it! It is practically the British equivalent of Toy Story, as both have original and compelling stories, fluid animation, and memorable characters. In Chicken Run, we have Ginger, a strong female lead, Rocky the 'Lone-Free Ranger', who is actually a runaway from the circus, Fowler the stubborn colonel rooster, comic relief hens Babs and Bunty, and scamming rats Nick and Fetcher. Also, Mrs. Tweedy is a menacing and threatening villain, probably Aardman's best villain, even if this was their first film. Chicken Run was so successful that Aardman and DreamWorks worked together on two more features, Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and Flushed Away. However, both of them were flops in the US, so DreamWorks and Aardman abandoned one another. I find that sad because I really liked Chicken Run and I would like to see more movies like it.
Rating: The perfect rating of 5 stars.
