Movie Review: Surf's Up 6-3-16
Remember how in my review of Ratatouille, I said I would review Surf's Up in June? Well, here's my review!
Surf's Up is a documentary-style CG animated film about a
teenage rockhopper penguin named Cody Maverick (Shia LaBouff). Cody
wants to surf like his hero, Big Z (Jeff Bridges), who supposedly died
ten years earlier. After being wiped out during a surfing match with big
shot Tank Evans (Diedrich Bader), Cody gets lost in the jungles of Pen
Gu Island, and meets a middle aged penguin nicknamed 'Geek'. 'Geek'
turns out to be Big Z himself, and Cody gets to learn from the master,
without being pranked by him.
Now what do I think of Surf's Up? I quite enjoyed it! The
animation is fluid, the story and characters are solid, and the music
from Mychael Danna is memorable. Like Cars, the lesson is about the
journey, not the race. However, in Surf's Up, they executed it better.
While Lightning McQueen is a rather unlikable gloater, Cody is likable
because he wants to win something, which is something viewers can relate
to. Also, Cars had way too many side characters, and we don't have
enough time with each of them. In Surf's Up, however, we get enough time
with each character. To top it all off, Surf's Up got a surprising
Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature, but lost to Ratatouille that
year. In conclusion, Surf's Up is an enjoyable alternative to Cars that
both kids and adults will like.
