Movie Review: Ron's Gone Wrong 4-12-25
Everyone in school has the coolest toy ever: The Bubble-Bot, a pill-shaped robot that knows everything about you. It can change its color like a chameleon, play music, contact loved loves, project holographic backgrounds, be rid on like a bicycle, find friends that share similar interests, and more! Everyone, that is, except for a boy named Barney Pudowski. Feeling bad that Barney doesn’t have a B-Bot like everyone else, his dad Graham and grandmother Donka decide to go to the Bubble Store to buy one. However, Barney’s new B-Bot, R0NB1NT5CAT5CO (Ron for short), is defective. At first, Barney wants nothing to do with Ron, but later learns that Ron can be a lot of fun. And a loyal friend.
Even though not as well known or as loved as other animated movies from 2021 like Luca, Encanto, and especially The Mitchells bs the Machines, Ron’s Gone Wrong makes up for it with impressive animation, engaging and relatable characters, a good score from Henry Jackman, and a surprisingly heartfelt tone.
There’s also a strong message in the movie about how you don’t need super-fancy technology to have fun or make new friends: You can do it all in person.
Even though a lot of people can relate to Barney, I can personally relate to Ron: I have an iPod Nano that is very dated: It only has about 2 hours of data and can be difficult to turn off, but at the same time, I love it.
It was actually smaller than this. And it was green. |
If I were to complain about one thing, I feel Ron’s Gone Wrong’s story goes all over the place. One minute, you have Ron trying to learn about Barney. Another minute, you have the two running away into the woods. To quote Fear in Inside Out 1, “Boo, pick a plot line!”
In conclusion, even though the movie has as many flaws as Ron does, Ron’s Gone Wrong is another good movie to watch on a rainy day.
Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5.
