Movie Review: Early Man 3-3-18
Aardman's
seventh feature film is about a young caveman named Dug. Dug and his
family live in a forest valley during the Stone Age, where they happily
hunt rabbits. However, Dug wants to hunt something bigger, like
mammoths. One day, a heard of mammoths invades their lands, lead by the
greedy Lord Nooth. Nooth evicts Dug's family out of the forest and into
the volcanic badlands to make room for the Bronze Age. Dug makes a deal
with Nooth that if they win a match of soccer against the Bronze Age
Soccer Team, the caveman family will have their land back. If not, they
will have to spend the rest of their lives working in the mine. Now,
with the help of ex-Bronze Ager Goona, Dug has to train his family to be
soccer pros to win their land back.
Now,
what do I think of Early Man? Well, I liked it more than The Croods,
but less than The Land Before Time. While not as good as Chicken Run,
Wallace and Gromit, and Arthur Christmas, Early Man has painstaking
animation, a creative plot, and some likable characters. My personal
favorite is Hob Nob the wild boar. He's a bit like Gromit, Wallace's dog
who never speaks, but always thinks.
Lord Nooth is also a fun villain, reminiscent of Prince John from Disney's Robin Hood, as well as Jim Broadbent's character in Around the World in 80 Days (the one with Jackie Chan).
Being
set in the Stone Age, Dug's family isn't that bright. However, they are
much more tolerable than Grug, Eep's stubborn father in The Croods. I
talked about The Croods back in this post.
In
conclusion, Early Man is a fun, albeit familiar, film that Brits will
enjoy that outshines almost every mainstream animated movie of 2017
except for Coco.
Rating: 3.75 out of 5.
