Joe soon arrived at Durian City, and he swapped his team for Manectric, Machamp, Togedemaru, and Gogoat. He then entered the city’s Gym, and he saw a dark-skinned Trainer fishing in his own indoor pond.
“You do know there are no fish Pokemon in the pool, don’t you?” Joe asked.
“You’re right.” Replied the man, pulling out a Magikarp toy with his rod. “But I do like fishing, no matter where I am. The name’s Andre, and you must be Joseph.”
“That’s me.” Said Joe, walking over to Andre. “Ready to battle?”
“As always.” Said Andre. “Go, Octillery!” Octillery was sent out.
“I choose you!” Said Joe. “Manectric!” Manectric was sent out.
“Manectric!” Said Joe. “Use Discharge!” Manectric flared lots of electricity to strike Octillery, leaving the Jet Pokemon with a quarter of his HP.
“Octillery!” Said Andre. “Use Mud Shot!” Octillery fired lots of mud at Manectric, leaving the Discharge Pokemon with 80% of his HP.
“Manectric!” Said Joe. “Use Thunderbolt!” Manectric fired a bolt of lightning at Octillery, and the Tank Pokemon fainted.
“Good thing my next Pokemon has 10 resistances!” Said Andre, returning Octillery to his Poke Ball. “Go, Lobsteel!” Lobsteel was sent out.
“You did a great job, Manectric!” Said Joe, returning the Discharge Pokemon to his Poke Ball. “Go, Machamp!” Machamp was sent out.
“Machamp!” Said Joe. “Use Cross Chop!” Machamp delivered four vicious chops at Lobsteel, leaving the Metal Lobster Pokemon with half his HP.
“Lobsteel!” Said Andre. “Use Crabhammer!” Lobsteel hammered Machamp with one of his mighty claws, dealing about 80 Hit Points to the Superpower Pokemon.
“Machamp!” Said Joe. “Use Close Combat!” Machamp attacked Lobsteel with all her might, and the Metal Lobster Pokemon fainted.
“My next Pokemon has amazing physical stats!” Said Andre, returning Lobsteel to his Poke Ball. “Go, Cloyster!” Cloyster was sent out.
“That was great, Machamp!” Said Joe, returning the Superpower Pokemon to her Poke Ball. “Go, Togedemaru!” Togedemaru was sent out.
“Togedemaru!” Said Joe. “Use Thunderbolt!” Togedemaru fired a bolt of lightning at Cloyster, leaving the Bivalve Pokemon with 10% of her HP.
“Cloyster!” Said Andre. “Use Razor Shell!” Cloyster attacked Togedemaru with her sharp shells, leaving the Roly-Poly Pokemon with 80% of his HP.
“Togedemaru!” Said Joe. “Use Zing Zap!” A strong electric blast crashed down on Cloyster, and the Bivalve Pokemon fainted.
“I didn’t see that coming.” Said Andre, returning Cloyster to her Poke Ball. “Go, Golduck!” Golduck was sent out.
“You deserve a rest, Togedemaru!” Said Joe, returning the Roly-Poly Pokemon to his Poke Ball. “Go, Gogoat!” Gogoat was sent out.
“Golduck!” Said Andre. “Use Ice Beam!” Golduck fired an icy beam at Gogoat, leaving the Mount Pokemon with 75% of his HP.
“Gogoat!” Said Joe. “Use Horn Leech!” Gogoat drained Golduck’s energy with his horns, which not only left the Duck Pokemon with half his HP, but also restored some to Gogoat.
“Golduck!” Said Andre, “Use Ice Beam!” Golduck tried firing another icy beam at Gogoat, but the attack missed.
“Gogoat!” Said Joe. “Use Leaf Blade!” Gogoat lashed at Golduck with his mighty horns, and the Duck Pokemon fainted.
“I still have one more chance!” Said Andre, returning Golduck to his Poke Ball. "Go, Mantine!” Mantine was sent out, and he had a Focus Sash tied around his horn.
“Great as usual, Gogoat!” Said Joe, returning the Mount Pokemon to his Poke Ball. “Go, Manectric!” Manectric was sent out.
“Manectric!” Said Joe. “Use Thunder Fang!” Manectric bit Mantine with shocking fangs, leaving the Kite Pokemon with 1 Hit Point left.
“Mantine!” Said Andre. “Use Hydro Pump!” Mantine fired lots of water at Manectric, leaving the Discharge Pokemon with 45% of his HP.
“Manectric!” Said Joe. “Use Shock Wave!” Manectric struck Mantine with a quick jolt of energy, and the Kite Pokemon fainted.
“I can’t believe that you’ve beaten me.” Said Andre, returning Mantine to his Poke Ball. “Here. Take this River Badge.” He handed Joe a blue wave-shaped Badge.
“Pokemon up to Level 70 will obey you, even those you receive in trades.” Andre explained. “You will also receive this.” Andre then gave Joe TM55, which contained Scald.
“TM55 contains Scald.” Andre explained. “Even though it’s a Water-Type attack, it has the ability to inflict burns. How many Badges have you collected?”
“Six.” Replied Joe while returning Manectric to his Poke Ball.
“Well, that leaves you with just two!” Said Andre. “Go on and beat the last two Gym Leaders!” Joe left the Gym to rest for the night.
